When authorities in Florida responded to investigate a complaint of a sinkhole in the middle of the road after a motorist drove into it last Wednesday, little did they know that it would turn out to be an underground tunnel leading to a nearby local Bank dug by would-be robbers who had intended to rob it.

According to FBI agents on the scene who found a small ladder, muddy boots and a stool nearby, the would-be robbers dug the small tunnel with pick axes and shovels and then used a small wagon (or cart) to remove dirt and rocks to the surface.

“The only thing I’ve ever seen like this is in the movies. This is truly a unique case here,” said FBI spokesman Mike Leverock who also described the hole as “very small, very claustrophobic.”

The tunnel which was said to be about 60 cm wide is about 45 m (50-ft) from the road to a nearby Chase Bank branch in Pembroke Pines.

Reports also indicate that investigators found some electric cords and electric generator in the entrance hole which was well-hidden in the nearby woodland.

This is the first time robbers have dug a tunnel to rob a bank in the U.S.

In 2011, robbers in Argentina, robbers made away with almost $7 million worth of safe boxes after tunnelling their way into the bank.  The robbers were ingenious in that they had dug a tunnel from an adjacent office next door.

So far, no arrests have been made and FBI is still seeking for information from the publication on identifying the would-be robbers who had devised such an elaborate scheme on casting out a bank heist.
