Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) helped pay for the now discredited, fake Russia dossier containing salacious allegations about President Trump and alleged connections to the Kremlin, according to a report on Tuesday.

The fake opposition research which also alleged possible interference by Russians in the campaign was conducted by Fusion GPS, a firm retained in April 2016 by Marc Elias, a laywer representing the Hillary Clinton campaign and the DNC. The firm in turn hired the now infamous ex-British spy and former MI6 Christopher Steele with ties to the FBI to conduct the research.

The Clinton campaign and the DNC continued paying for the dossier through October 2016 until a few days before the November 8, 2016 election.  Steele would later share some of his findings with the FBI after they started probing possible connections between Trump campaign associates and the Russian government.

Noting the development, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders tweeted that “The real Russia scandal?  Clinton paid for the fake Russian dossier, then lied about it & covered it up.”

Lingering questions about who paid for the fake dossier have sparked a partisan battle as lawmakers in Washington investigate an alleged Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election and any possible coordination with the Trump campaign.

Republican lawmakers have questioned the credibility of the fake dossier and whether it contained disinformation peddled by Russians or was a deliberate smear by by Trump’s political enemies. The lawmakers have also questioned the FBI’s approach to the dossier, how the agency reportedly started looking into the dossier’s in 2016 leading into unanswered questions about whether or not the FBI at some point last year paid the ex-British spy for the document.

With this breaking news, the DNC and Democrat legislatures have been quick to deny and distance themselves from the unravelling saga of the Fake Trump Dossier and who paid for the it after spending months defending and using it as the driving source for the bogus ongoing Trump-Russia investigation.

Former spokesperson for the Trump Presidential Campaign, Katrina Pierson took to Twitter and said, “W/all this BREAKING Russia Clinton corruption NEWS, it now makes sense that Hillary deleted 30k emails & took hammers to blackberries.”

Donald Trump Jr., the President’s eldest child who referred to the fake dossier story as “interesting” tweeted, “You know if the Washington Post can’t sweep this under the rug it’s a big deal.”

With this revelation of who partially funded the research into the now infamous and discredited Russia-Trump Dossier by Fusion GPS through Steele, which includes the Clinton Campaign and DNC, people will further question whatever remains of its credibility.

The House Intelligence Committee is currently embroiled in a legal battle over records that could provide further information about who originally financed the dossier investigation. The committee subpoenaed Fusion GPS’s bank records in an effort to learn who paid for the research. A federal judge has pushed back the subpoena compliance date until Friday.
