Emmerson Mnangagwa and his illegitimate government’s sudden interest in tackling endemic corruption after almost four decades of the man feeding from the public trough is a bit rich. The anti-corruption campaign going after selected targets is not only a ruse but a methodical exercise at purging the G40 opposition, dissenters and critics of the Mnangagwa-Chiwenga cabal’s bid to consolidate power ahead of the 2018 General Election.

The campaign is a political tool to crush and destroy perceived enemies as well as an intimidation tactic to scare and silence would-be dissenters.
If the usurper Mnangagwa is sincere about tackling corruption, then he needs to lead by example and start at the top. He should start with himself, his vice usurper and co-coup plotter retired General Constantino Chiwenga, Obert Mpofu and the rest of the corrupt career political turncoats surrounding him.

For the purpose of transparency and accountability, Mnangagwa and Chiwenga must declare and make public all their assets including finances both within and outside the country accumulated over the years as career public servants. The assets should also include those registered to spouses (former and current), children, family members as well as small houses who may have benefited directly or indirectly from every individual under probe.
Furthermore, for the sake of fairness and credibility in the process, an outside independent non-governmental body or Special Commission should be established since the government or its agencies cannot be trusted to investigate its own. The Special Commission should be led by retired Judges like Justice Chris Greenland, respected academics such as Dr. Ibbo Mandaza or any such respected individuals as would be deemed fit by Zimbabweans.
The Special Commission should have the power and full mandate to collect, contact and work with anyone including international bodies, financial institutions and governments to demand and obtain record of finances and assets hidden outside Zimbabwe. Most important, they should be able to do so without government interference or oversight.
Upon conclusion, the findings should be made public, including each individual’s name, list of assets and worth. Anything that falls short of that will confirm what everybody else has been suspicious of, that the targeted, anti-corruption ruse is nothing but a political purge on the Generation 40 (G40) members, a faction of the now dead ZANU (PF) party.
This is a chance for all Zimbabwean opposition parties, civil society and non-governmental organizations to come together in support of a Special Commission and demand the formation of one, and soon. The findings are important in determining the way forward for Zimbabwe as it sheds its past and looks forward to a new political dispensation that Zimbabweans have long craved for.
