President Trump and First Lady Melania hosted a reception at the White House in honour of the African-American History Month on Tuesday. The event largely attended by African-Americans celebrated an important element of their life and culture.
In his speech, President Trump paid tribute to prominent historical African-American figures, recognizing the important roles they played during each of their lifetime.
“Just like so many African Americans throughout our history who have struggled and sacrificed for freedom, we must do our part to make that vision real for every single American,” he addressed a room filled with about 150 invited guests.
Speaking from the East Room, President Trump honoured African-Americans and their contribution to the country for generations pointing out that they “fought courageously in every war since the Revolution.”
“Long before our nation righted the wrongs of slavery and segregation, African Americans gave their hearts, their sweat, their blood and their very lives to defend the United States, its flag and its highest ideals,” he added.
He also brought up, praised and honoured prominent historical figures including those of the and Civil Rights movement, linking them to current ongoing struggles within the African-American community.
“You defend for all Americans the same beautiful dream that inspired Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and countless others.”
“It is a dream where every citizen regardless of color, religion or background can grow up to succeed and to thrive — a nation where every family is safe, where every community can prosper, and where all Americans can stand tall and proud and free.”
President Trump also touted the new historic low unemployment rate among African-American communities for the first time since ever, crediting the historic shift to his administration’s policies geared towards minorities.
“It’s so much fun to have you hear to celebrate a very important element of our culture and our life: African-American history.”
He ended the event by acknowledging the contributions to the nation by Blacks and African-Americans and gave a positive view of the future.
“Just like so many African Americans throughout our history who have struggled and sacrificed for freedom, we must do our part to make that vision real for every single American. As long as we have faith in our citizens, confidence in our values and trust in God, we will not fail. We will protect the birthright of freedom for all Americans.”
