39-year old Centre Left candidate Emmanuel Macron has been elected the new French President after defeating far-right candidate Marie Le Pen. Macron who defeated Marie Le Pen 65.5% to 34.9% is the youngest French President since Napoleon Bonaparte if not for all time.
Macron says he had a “brief and cordial phone call” with his rival who conceded defeat after exit polls predicted a huge win for the young and inexperienced President-elect. Macron is also the first French President to come from outside the two traditional, mainstream political parties since 1958.
President Holland has congratulated Macroni saying election results indicate that the French people wanted “to unite” and wished him “all the success”, almost supporting Macron’s statement that a “new chapter of hope and confidence is opening.”
Election reports coming out indicate that only 5% of in Paris voted for Le Pen while 9 out of 10 districts with the highest rate of unemployment in the whole of France went to Marie Le Pen. Political pundits and analysts see this as a huge problem and serious indictment for the young and inexperienced Macron and the policies of the Left.
There already an indication that Macron will have a challenging once it comes to actual policies and governing, when taking into consideration that he won mainly in big cities and highly populated metropolitan areas while the rest of the country voting against him, either by voting for Marie Le Pen or through abstention.
U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated Macron via a Tweet, ‘Congratulations to Emmanuel Macron on his big win today as the next President of France. I look very much forward to working with him!’
A statement from 10 Downing Street sent a congratulatory message from British Prime Minister Theresa May on Macro’s electoral victory saying, “We look forward to working with the new President on a wide range of shared priorities.”
The ‘warm’ congratulatory message from Mrs. May comes after a controversial position on the UK and Brexit by Macroni and his 64-year old wife who is also his former High School teacher.
Although claiming to be fond of Britain and have personal tries through vacations, the young and inexperienced President-elect views British exit from the EU as “a crime” and has indicated he prefers a ‘Hard Brexit’ stance which would see the country excluded from the EU single market.
Marie Le Pen is a staunch supporter of Brexit and would like for France to follow suit with its own Frexit.
Le Pen in a speech thanked all the 11 million people who supported and voted for her and her party. Although she conceded defeat, Marie Le Pen for a new political force to take France forward highlighting a polarized environment and divisions between “patriots and globalist,” made bare by the elections.
